[[underlined]] Jan. 13 [[/underlined]] Took a bag of traps in morning & started up the mountains S.E. of camp to set traps & look for grass. Set a few traps along a wash & then went on up to a brown lava rock peak just 1000 feet above camp. Found some bunch grass on the north side of the hills high up but not very thick. Tic & Trask took the horses up to a caƱon above the spring where they found fairly good bunch grass. Took the tram & hauled down a barrel of water from the upper spring, about 2 miles from camp.
Lone Willow Spring does not furnish enough water for our stock. The upper spring is larger & the water is excellent. The mountains west of the valley are of granite with lava ridges here & there. They are low & bare with a few shrubs & cactus & some bunch grass. Larrhea mex runs over the top & is the characteristic plant of the whole country. Browns Peak lies to the N.E. It is bare & brown with bright streaks of red & other colors. A few Yucca brevifolias show on its / summit.
Our camp is at the old water tanks in valley about 1 1/2 miles below the spring - Lone Willow Spr. & is 650 feet below the spring. The first peak S.W. of camp is 1000 feet above camp. This is barometer Camp No. 4.
Palmer & Coville came at about 5 P.M.
