30[[degree symbol]] at sunrise.

[[underlined]] Jan. 19 [[/underlined]] Packed up as early as we could and started for Death Valley at 9 A.M. Put 6 horses on the big wagon and two on our load. Got stuck on the hill at Windy Gap & had to double our teams. Got to the top at 12:30. This makes us late. drove as fast as we could with the small team so as to get to Bennets Wells in two days. Can only carry water for one night. The big team will take 3 days for the trip -
By my aneroid the top of of ridge in Windy Gap is 200 feet above our camp at tanks below Lone Willow Spring.
Follow through Long Valley with a slight down grade. After following it about 10 miles it becomes a wide wash between bare hills of trap & lava. Followed this wash down to near the edge of Death Valley & made a dry camp. Much of the ground is bare, vegetation is scattering. Holes of Dipodomys deserti are common up to near the top of divide in Windy Gap on both sides, but not quite to the summit owing to stony ground.
There is nothing to hinder this freely passing
