Camped at 7 P.M. Came about 28 miles. Warm in morning, 50[[degree symbol]] at 6 A.M. 63[[degree symbol]] at 7 P.M. at edge of Death Valley. The warmest day for a long time. [[underlined]] Jan. 20 [[/underlined]]. Nelson had out a few traps, set by moonlight, and got a Neotoma & a Hesperomys. Dikeman broke his other aneroid & had to have the one he lent me so I can take no altitudes. Our camp was about 3 miles from the end of Long Valley where it joins Death Valley. Started at 7 A.M. Came 6 miles & found Salt Wells. 2 wells 22 feet deep with plenty of water but it is saturated with salt. 9 miles farther we came to Mesquit Well, about 8 feet down to water, water not good but we gave the horses nearly a pail full apiece. It is slightly salty & seems to contain soda. 7 1/3 miles farther we reach Bennetts Wells with plenty of good water about 6 feet down. Camped here at 4P.M. Good grass all around. Nelson calls it Baccaton Grass. It grows in big bunches 2 feet high & more. the stems 4 or 6 feet high. Prosopis julifolia is common in large bunches all along this side of valley from 10 miles
