[[blank page]] [[end page]] [[start page]] Road fairly good but not much traveled. Saw 3 graves by road, one of W.M. Stadley, the others unnamed. Saw Coyote & Fox tracks all along. Holes of Dipodomys deserti are common most of way. Saw some Tamias tracks. Saw a lot of insects - grasshoppers, ants, beetles, 2 kinds of butterflies, a wasp, a "cut worm," mosquitos, flies, gnats. Along ^[[insertion]] W. [[/insertion]] side of valley the vegetation is better than in Panamint Valley. Nelson & I each set 30 traps before dark. I got 2 small lizzards. Nelson killed a big one. Saw birds of 6 species. [[underlined]] Jan. 21 [[/underlined]] Caught 4 D. deserti & 3 Neotomas. Nelson got the same & 2 Hesperomes & fished a Neotoma & a Dipodemys & a snake & scorpion out of one of the wells. Set traps, made up skins - Palmer & party came along at 2:30 37[[degree symbol]] at 6:30. 75[[degree symbol]] at 1. Pleasant. [[underlined]] Jan. 22 [[/underlined]] Nelson caught a little Spermophile, nothing else new taken. Palmer & party moved on to Furnace Creek. With our party are Nelson, Dikeman & Coville, our cook & myself. 31[[degree symbol]] in morning, a warm day, hazy in P.M.
