[[underlined]] Bennetts Wells
Jan. 23 [[/underlined]] Went to my traps as early as I could, got 2 Spermophiles, 2 Hesperomys sonoriensis, a long tailed Hesperomys & some common things. Took up traps. Coville & I took each a blanket & canteen & lunch to last over night & at 8 A.M. started across the valley to go up into the Funeral Mts. Crossed the bare, salt flat in a direction a little south of east. Counted our steps to measure the distance. The bare flat was 10000 steps across, about 4 1/2 miles. The aneroid only registered 25 feet below Bennetts Wells in crossing. The flat appears level. several small channels wind through it to the north, one had a little water in holes, near middle of valley. Part of the bare region has a hard crust of chrystalized salt several inches thick, generally rough & broken up & mixed with clay. Parts of it are smoothe & muddy. Some times we sank in the mud an inch, most of the way good walking. About half the flat is brown clay on top, half is covered with white chrystals of borax or soda so that it looks like snow. The only plant life we saw on the flat except along shore was a few bunches of Spirostachys in a wet channel near middle of flat.
