[[blank page]] [[end page]] [[start page]] Walking fairly good but it would be difficult, if possible to get a horse across. Found a small pond of salt water near shore opposite camp. Could see no other water. Mirages were common all around us, & made what looked like lakes of blue water. can not see plainly low down, the air is all a tremble next to the ground. Not a very hot day, up to 73[[degree symbol]] at 1 P.M. We did not take a drink until across the valley, did not get thirsty. Saw no animal life while crossing the bare flat except a few flies around the water hole mentioned. They seemed to be the same flies that swarmed around Owen Lake. Their larvae, or some other small worm lived in the puddle & made trails & holes in the mud. In crossing the flat we struck from camp (at Bennetts Wells) north 79[[degree symbol]] east, (compass bearing), about 5 [[degree symbol]] S. of E. Went to end of a narrow cañon half a mile back from salt flat but could not get up it. Then followed along base of Mts. about a mile S. to another cañon & up it a mile to where it had an abrupt [[strikethrough]] drop [[/strikethrough]] rise of 50 feet that we could not get over. Then climbed over & down into another canon east of it & followed up it a mile or
