The plants in the cañon show zonal limits distinctly, & there are many well defined zones of plants which we have noted before. Artimisa tridentata & another like A. arbuseda, Circocarpus ledifolius, Cowania mex., Bigelovias, Atriplex canescens, grape & Clematis vines, Larrhea has a well marked upper limit, I did not spend the time to take limits of many plants as that will be done by Coville.
Found some horns of Mt. sheep in the cañon.
Thomomes are numerous & do much damage to the Indians crops.

[[underlined]] Jan. 27 [[/underlined]] Slept cold, had to keep fire all night, got up an hour before daylight & started for Panamint. Took the wrong trail & went onto a ridge 2000 feet high & had to come back & start over.
Guess it is about 5 miles from my camp place up to divide, then 2 miles down to Panamint. It is a hard steep climb over loose shingle on steep slopes & over hard, slippery snow. Reached the summit at 10 oclock & Panamint about 11. Got the mail & started back as soon as I could. Recrossed the divide & hurried down the canon, did not reach the lower end & get all my traps up till dark. Got into camp at 9:30 P.M.
