& is strong of soda & other stuff.
The grass is dry Distichlis maridima, - salt grass - and a funcus. 2 species of Scirpus & Communis phragmites are abundant, but there is no grass fit for stock to eat. We are without grain, our horses are poor & weak & we can not use them till the team comes from Daggett with grain.
Found a lot of Ducks in the ponds & Nelson & I each killed one but the rest went off. There is quite a stream running from the spring - furnishing water for a pond about 20 rods wide & 30 long. It is cut up by strips of grass into 3 ponds. Reeds & Scirpus & coarse plants grow in the edge of the water & form cover for coots & rails.
A big soda & salt crusted flat - the bed of the Amergosa - extends along the valley. It is a half to a mile wide opposite the spring, Mesquits grow along the other side. There are some small streams running along the wash. The water is strong of salt & soda, which crust the ground. Saw Bats flying about pond in evening but did not shoot any.
