Took up my small traps and reset 41 of them for Zapus. Made up todays skins in afternoon & evening. Killed one young Dendrogopus from a flock of 5 or 6. They were not half grown. 36 [[degree symbol]] in morning & ice 2 mm. thick on the water. Cold in morning & evening & not too warm all day. [[underlined]] Aug.7 [[/underlined]] Coville & I started at 8 A.M., went around to the caƱon west of us & up past the White Chief Mine to the top of a ridge where his barometer read 10400 feet. Mine [[strikethrough]] did [[/strikethrough]] does not go up above 10000 & did not work up to that. Followed up an E. & N.E. slope so we were above timberline from a little above 9000 feet. The timber (Pinus balfouriana) came up to the top of ridge at 10400 on S.W. side. We got a lot of good notes on high zone plants & animals. Found lots of new & interesting plants high up. Found lots of new & interesting plants high up. Found Leucostictes common above timber on N.E. slope, also Juncos & a Cinclus, Salpinctes & Sialia - were common to top of ridge or S.W. Found Tamias minimus & Lagomys & Arvicola above timberline on N.E. There was a small & very deep lake in solid granite rock at 10000 on N.E. slope. It was mostly covered with old thick ice. The open places were freezing over soon after the sun left it at 6 P.M. There were grassy
