Sabal adansoni, and Arundinaria gigantea and Tillandsia usenoides are characteristic Some large plantations of good cotton & corn lie along the R.R. but over half of the country is uncleared. The land is so low that it is probably unhealthy.
The water is just reaching Rayville from a break in the Miss. levee and is in places 3 feet deep and pouring down in great streams.
Left Rayville at 6 P.M. and reached Munroe an hour later and have to wait till 8 A.M for train to Mer Rouge.
The same flat low country to Monroe.

[[underlined]] June 1 [[/underlined]] Left Monroe at 8:40 A.M. and arrived at Mer Rouge at 10 A.M. Went out into the country and found a place to board about a mile from town with Mr. Harkness.
Geomys hills and mole ridges are common. set traps.
There are said to be Fox Squirrels in the woods but we did not find any, Saw one from the train as we came along
Rained hard in the night and in showers most all day.

[[underlined]] Mer Rouge, La. [[/underlined]]

[[underlined]] June 2 [[/underlined]], We got each 11 Geomys, I killed a Fox Squirrel and Coleman a Cottontail. Coleman shot 4 Bats and I one. A cold day so that we wore our coats all day for comfort.
[[underlined]] June 3 [[/underlined]]
Caught 10 Geomes, shot 3 bats & got a Mink of a fellow who killed it in the woods. Coleman caught 4 Geomes and shot [[strikethrough]] 6 [[/strikethrough]] 8 bats.
Had a mess of fried Geomys for supper and they were good, no bad flavour, were not well cooked but would have been very nice.
[[underlined]] June 4 [[/underlined]] Caught 6 Geomys & bought 3 Moles of darkie boys & shot 2 bats. 
Coleman got 2 Geomys & a Gray Squirrel & a Barred Owl & shot 3 bats.
Got letter of instructions.
[[underlined]] June 5 [[/underlined]] Sunday.

[[underlined]] June 6 [[/underlined]], Wrote on my report & packed things in A.M. then decided to make one more effort for Squirrels and not start till tomorrow. Hunted all of P.M. in the fine hills 4 miles west of here. but found no Squirrels. Got caught in a hard rain.
