[[underlined]] Cairo, Kansas [[/underlined]]

high, clay prairie some five miles west of Wachita. Saw Geomys hills on sandy bottom land west of Arkansas River, but none on the clay prairie. Found them again on sandy creek bottom west of Cheney and some on a clay ridge west of Murdock.  Near Kingman the soil becomes more sandy and Geomys hills are are common to Cairo.
[[underlined]] Prairie Dogs [[/underlined]], saw a colony of some 40 acres of P.Ds between Garden Plain & Cheney and Burrowing Owls with them, also a few Cinomys [[strikethrough]] at [[/strikethrough]] west of Murdock.
[[underlined]] Lepus texianus [[/underlined]], saw 4 from Cheney westward  
Followed the valley of South Fork of Ninnescah River most of the way from Kingman west. Sandhills and rolling prairie & river flats & marshes.  Very few trees, only stunted willow & cottonwood.

[[underlined]] July 28 [[/underlined]] Engaged board with Mr. Grier, near the station. Took traps & went across to north side of Ninnescah R. & set traps along edge of sandhills. Caught a Geomomys & an Arvicola & in P.M. went about 2 1/2 miles west to a P.D. town. Shot 2 Cynomys & a Lepus texanus
