prairie has a hard or clay soil.  The very pale little cottontail was abundant all the way.  At least 30 seen.  Saw 5 Lepus texianus.  Saw one S. 13lineatus at Harold.  
The P.D. Fork of Red R. is a dry sand flat about half a mile wide.  Is probably the main branch of the Red R.
I ought to have stopped at Memphis but a distorted R.R. map caused me to come to Clarendon.  Probably the zones meet near Memphis.
A delicious change of weather from the heat at Wichita Falls to a cool, fresh air at Clarendon.

[[underlined]] Aug. 21 [[/underlined]] Sunday - staid all day at Clarendon, tramped over the country some, found no signs of Geomys or Dipedomys, saw Lepus tex. L. sylvaticus pallidus, & holes of P.Ds.  The slender leaved Artemisia is abundant.  Prosopis [[blank space]] bushes are quite common in places but smaller than usual.
Saw a Sparrow Hawk & Shrike & lots of Otocoris.  Took a 9:30 P.M. train for Washburn.  Could get no train in daylight.
