JACQUES SELIGMANN & CO., Inc., 5 East 57th. Street, New York, New York. ^[[Nov 6/40]] Dear Colin Agnew: I am addressing this letter to you in London, though I am hoping that you are away in the country and far from the atrocious bombing. Before talking business, I want you to know how we all feel here towards the gallantry of the British people. Though I don't believe that people's minds in England have been very much towards art, I would like to know whether anything transpired in connection with the Roger van der Weyden portrait. Now, I was also wondering whether you knew of anyone owning important modern French impressionist paintings who might be desirous of selling them and who would be willing to send them to America? This might have the double advantage of safeguarding this very valuable property against damage and of giving the Government Dollar balances. If I am inquiring, it is because we have had one or two requests for very important paintings of that school and though these are not the type of paintings which you regularly deal with, you might be in a position to know of some. I am glad to be able to tell you that contrary to what the feeling must be in England, some Frenchmen did fight, and I have just heard that my young brother Francois Gerard, whom you know, has been awarded the Croix de Guerre with a grand citation - in fact, among other engagements, he was also at Dunkirk! With kindest thoughts, Yours very sincerely, (Germain Seligmann) Colin Agnew, Esq., Thos. Agnew & Sons, Ltd., 43 Old Bond Street, London, England.
