[[/underlined]] Followed up Sun River Valley to Sun River (town) and there left the valley and turning northward traveled over smoothe, grassy plains to a great dry basin called Freezeout, where are several ranches and much stock, sheep & cattle & horses. A few miles beyond we struck a large ditch of excellent water coming from the N.W. and a lake near it. Camped by the ditch with good grass & water. Not a tree seen after leaving Sun River. Sun River Valley is settled and is full of five ranches, with large fields of hay & grain. Good buildings, trees set out and prosperous looking farms. The river is quite large & the water excellent. No water along road for 15 miles between Sun River Crossing and Freezeout, but good grass all the way. Lots of Cynomys & Spermophilus along road. The high snow capped range of the Rockies appears not far to the west.
