Before leaving Tigil I had purchased a whale boat which was now in Lessior, our baggage was put on board as well as on a "bagdara" large seal skin boat, Kennan was sent over the mountains with one Kosak, eight Kamtchadals and twenty horses. Dodd and myself took command of the boats. We agreed about signals to correspond with the land party and  September 21" our two small crafts left Lessior by calm weather, but a heavy swell resulting from a furious gale of the preceeding day. We had to see Kennan twice before Podkagernaya in places where the mountain road comes out on the sea beach. If his report about the land road was favorable and we had bad weather at sea, our baggage had to be put on horses. If the land road proved to be impassable my intention was to leave Dodd and Kennan, with the greatest part of the baggage, await in Lessior the establishment of the winter road, and to go myself with the whaleboat to Podkagernaya from there I had to cross Penjinsk Gulf to Cape Taiganoss where  I knew I could find reindeer koriaks who would bring me to Shijiga. But this could be done only by fair weather and unfortunately soon after our departure arose a fresh breeze, which very soon increased to such a degree that I began to be anxious about the "bagdara".
