Kamchatka and in the sea coast province.  River Kora flowing from west to east and emptying into Tansk Bay is the only stream, where I will be able to use larger boats, probably on a distance of a couple of hundred versts. 

Notwithstanding the inferiority of the rein deer as beasts of burden, I intend to use them in preference to dogs and horses.  Dogs are too expensive and we would require an immense number of them, besides the trouble of preparing large supplies of fish necessary for their food, and the impossibility of using them in summer.  Horses could be had in large quantities and at comparatively cheap prices, from 15 to 20 roubles piece, but the preparation of hay and the distribution of it along the line for the winter months would require a considerable addition of working hands.  We will have, nevertheless, to keep a certain number of them in the few points, where they can render better services than reindeer.

The reindeer have one immense advantage, they don't require any previous preparations or supplies of food like dogs and horses, being always able to get their food from under the snow.  In locating the telegraph route I invariably thought of the necessity to have in its immediate vicinity moss pasture grounds, the reindeer requiring rest and food three times a day at least, and I think I can assert that three
