became indispensable after our wild life of the last three months, to be ready to start to the Anadyr and ascertain about the other party.
  Many important questions were in connection with the explorations south of Ghijiga, first of all we had the submarine lines, and the necessity to avoid them as much as possible, besides many other serious points which I had to settle myself. Consequently I undertook to explore the country between Ghijiga and Okhotsk, where I expected to meet the officers I had sent in August from Kamscatka to Nikolaersk, but before reaching Ghijiga I wanted to examine one half of the country between this place and Anadyrsk. River Aklan divides in two the distance from Ghijiga to Anadyrsk and I wanted to get to a point on the river about eighty versts north of Kamennoi. Half by persuasion and half by force , I succeeded to obtain a couple of sleighs, and was thus enabled to explore the three larger rivers flowing into Penjinsk Gulf, to find on their banks timber of good quality and decide about the route of the line on a distance
