of 400 four hundred versts. In Ghijiga I found Kennan and Dodd preparing for their travel and the Ispravnik, an old acquantance, seeming rejoiced of my arrival and ready to assist us in all I shall require.

Soon after my two companions left for Anadyrsk, fitted out as well as the small resources of Ghijiga, and the extremely high prices on articles of first necessity permitted me to do it. Owing to the Ispravnik's readyness to accomodate us in every respect, I obtained for them an escort of four Cosacks, all good carpenters and people who had visited Anadyr country several times, and were accustomed to deal with the Tchuktchis. They are also bearers of an order to the Starost. (a sort of Mayor.) of Anadyrsk, who is directed to be entirely at the disposition of our telegraph parties. If all is done according to my wishes and instructions, and Kennon not detained too long in searching the other party, considerable work must be done before the 1st of may on the Anadyr, one of the largest rivers in Siberia, and navigable for a small steamer, from its mouth to Anadysk.
