I have placed Ennis ^[[insertion]] with 3 others [[/insertion]] in charge of operations west of the Youkon toward the straits and shall myself attempt to get up to Fort Youkon in Jan or Feb. I am somewhat doubtful as to ever getting even to Fort Youkon before the long days of March.

Things don't look at all pleasant and I wish I were here quite alone with a small outfit of my own choosing. - I could then "go in" with a lighter heart than I now do when I have the safety and comfort of others to look after.

I shall go as far up the Youkon as I can and return here by open water. -

I have been to Nulato and [[strikethrough]] returned here I [[/strikethrough]] finding it impossible move up the the Youkon at once returned here.
