San Francisco May 2nd 1865

Dear Prof Baird

Mr. Kennicott is now so full of business that he finds it impossible to attend to his correspondence himself, and he has given me the duty of writing a word or two to you to let you know how we are all getting on at the present time. We arrived here last Tuesday night and found Col. Bulkley and staff here. Since our arrival Mr. Kennicott has been so busy in attending to the details of engaging men, outfit, &c. that he finds no time to attend to anything else. He instructed me to tell you that he is working very hard but that he feels equal to it, and also that everything is progressing satisfactorily.

We are all well and in good spirits, and are anxious to be out of here and into the wilderness. Rothrock is Mr. Kennicotts right hand man; Henry Elliott, Dall, and the rest of the party have also been very useful and have
