been very busily engaged. Probably I have been the least useful member of our party in the present emergency, not being quite quick enough to be worth much in clerkwork.

There have volunteered for this expedition a number of first rate young men, so that the prospect is fair that we shall have good company and a first-rate time generally. I have no fears that any of us will break down on this trip. Maj. Pope and his brother arrived on the regular mail steamer a day or two after us so that our party is now complete.
