coffin and brought down the river to St. Michael by Mr. Pease, ^[[insertion]]with [[/insertion]] Adams and Smith. There they remained till the arrival of this vessel. They are now on board and Mr. Pease is going through to the grave with them. If possible he will visit Washington also.

I cannot tell you how much this sad event affected us here. Everyone felt that he had lost a friend, he had no enemies.

I will write more fully from San Francisco and tell all about natural history collections. We have done all that we could in that line. An accident which I met with last winter prevented my spending another season in Russian America, and I may possibly return to the states this winter.

Dall is comfortably fixed by this time and I think that the prospects for collections are better than ever.
