Baird Smithsonian Institute Washg DC Dear Sir, I intended the Captain's Service and pay to commence on the date of his acceptance; Subsistence furnished and his position will be "as one of the associate officers of the party and not a common enlisted man". The translation received and the small part I have had time to examine promises much valuable information. In regard to the volunteer (Mr. Maynard) it will be necessary to know before deciding, whether he has muscle and will sufficient for the occasion.
