Russian American Company has a good harbor. North of Ajan there is a tolerable harbor at the mouth of the Aldenace River, and stores can also be landed at the mouths of the Ulkan and Ulya Rivers, about one hundred versts below Okhotsk. Between Okhotsk and Ghijigha Major Abasa has selected ten points, as suitable for landing stores.

[[margin]] Rivers - [[/margin]] In nearly every case, throughout the Siberian Division, the rivers are navigable, at least for flat bottomed canoes, while some of them have sufficient depth for large whale boats, or even small, stern-wheel steamers. All the rivers form excellent sledge roads in winter.

[[margin]] Transportation. [[/margin]] During the winter, for transportation, and at all times for travelling purposes, reindeer must be mainly depended upon, except through the country south of Okhotsk, where horses can be used to advantage. Reindeer have two advantages over dogs. 1st - They are cheaper, costing only 10 or 12 Roubles each. 2nd. - The cost of maintenance is trifling, as moss pastures, sufficient for their support, are found in every portion of the Division. Reindeer, packed, will carry from 75 to 125 lbs, and with sledges will draw 2 men and 75 lbs. of baggage. Frequent relays of deer will be required, which can be herded at various points on the route, under charge of Yakouts and Tchuctchois. These animals will haul a sledge, with moderate load, two thousand versts in two feet of snow, if not frozen, in seventeen days, about 1300 Miles.
