so little, seems almost like a failure. But we console ourselves with the idea, that neither pains nor exertions have been spared to overcome the obstacles and disappointments we have met with and that the commencement is made.

I am happy to state that the men worked willingly and faithfully, and from what I have heard, were very agreeably surprised at the manner in which they were treated. A number of them volunteered to go to the mouth of the river with us and others are going to move on to the Myan, as soon as we are established there. I have engaged fish from nearly all the inhabitants, so that at another time we will probably have an abundance of food of our own.
