A few versts further, we found the owners of Vaccarana, from whom I obtained some jerked venison, they having speared 15 deer this spring. Just above the junction of the Myan with the Anadyr, we happened to strike the channel of the river, where we found 10 fathoms of water.

The right bank of the Myan seems to be well adapted to telegraph purposes, being a rolling tundera, apparently dry, and covered with Kedivemik or stunted pines, which will answer for firewood.

At the mouth of the Myan is a collection of huts, at present unoccupied, but used by the inhabitants of Markova and Crepast in the latter part of the summer, when they come to this place to watch for the crossing of deer in their autumnal migrations to the mountains south of the Anadyr, where they winter. This is one of the greatest crossing places, and hundreds are speared every summer.

At this season deer are migrating north, to escape the clouds of hungry mosquitoes, that swarm the tunderas.

We found them so troublesome, that we were compelled to wear nets day and night, and could not take off our skin clothing, even [[left margin]] (10) [[/left margin]] while sleeping under our blankets. In spite of all precautions our hands and faces are
