[[inter]]ested in Botany. The weather here is very wet. It rains nearly all the time, seldom more than one fine day in ten.  It is a good dredging ground and there are many birds in spring - also a good many nice plants & land snails.  I think not many fish, but a great variety of forms of crustaceans.  All the vices of a civilized community are crowded in to this backwoods post.  Licentiousness, gambling, drinking, are carried much farther in proportion than in San Francisco, even.  I hear good accounts of Maynard, & Rothrock
I hope to work on the Californian coast next winter, & will write you at length about it as soon as I get back to Frisco. Dr Tomy knows the plans - I hope I take no liberty in writing this freely to you.
