Dear Prof. Baird,

Your very welcome letter of the 7th ult. was duly rec'd. I am greatly your debtor, for constant acts of kindness and thoughtfulness, and can only repay you by this slight expression of my thanks.

Since my last, several things of interest have taken place. I was appointed acting Surgeon when Dr. Fisher went East, and the duty of fitting out our fleet of eight large vessels [[strike-through]] does [[/strikethrough]] with medical stores, devolves upon me. I have given it the most careful attention, and have rec'd compliments not only from superior officers, but from medical men, for the manner in which the work has been done hitherto. The list of vessels which may be of interest to you, is as follows. Flag ship Nightingale, 1100 T, Str Geo. S. Wright, 240 T, Barks Golden Gate 338 T, Clara Bell abt 260 T, Palmetto, 290 T, H.L. Rutgers, 540 T, & onward 310 T, besides a little steam launch of 5 T and two sternwheel flatboats for the Youkon, of abt. 7 T each
   As I told you that no dependance was to be placed upon Bulkleys promises, I rec'd news from him the other day, that Henry Elliott was to accompany Mr. Conway into the Stickeen country. As this would
