One of the Directors of the Company Mr. Mumford, a young but keen business man has arrived. He is to look to things [[underlined]] "while we are gone away," [/under-lined]] they say at the office, and [[underlined]] before too, I "guess [/underlined]]  I think they are drawing the reins tighter on the Col. and must say from their point of view, he needs it. His associates in this city, are not gentlemen, of standing, but the editors of a copperhead newspaper and a number of played out old sports. His only lady acquaintances that anyone knows of, are a mother; and daughter to whom I should say if his wife was dead, he was intending honorable proposals. As his wife still lives in a lunatic asylum in New York State, only one other idea can be entertained. They don't know he is married.
