II The officer in charge of the station which Lieut Dall may select, will furnish him necessary quarters and rations.

III. Should it be necessary to send a party to the relief of Major Kennicott, Lieut Dall has permission to accompany such party if he wishes.

I shall go up on the Nightingale which may not leave for three weeks, and whether I get Henry Elliott or not, where I stop, or whether I return to San Francisco next winter or not depends on news from Bob, and circumstances over which I shall have no control 'till the time comes. The only thing which is tolerably certain is that Capt. Scammon in the Nightingale will go to the mouth of the Youkon to make the necessary explorations, probably starting in near Cape Romanzoff. If I find a good place to collect I may
