strike so completely home, as I did not know that Mr. Walker was interested in lots or railroads though I knew others were.

I have accomplished during the past season since my return, about as follows.

The years collections were packed, and every individual specimen, note and drawing were forwarded to the S.I. I made a trip to Monterey at my own expense (about $50.00) and succeeded beyond my hopes in the matter of collections, getting 219 species, over 100 more than any other collector who ever visited the place, not excepting Cooper, who dredged, while my work was wholly along shore. He got in all 90 sp.  I have worked up, arranged, and forwarded these collections to Carpenter for revision in such a shape that if the matter is of sufficient interest, a very good paper will be made of it, and if not, it will be in such a shape as to be directly accessible and available for him in his studies. I obtained about 18 new or unrecognized species, and very valuable biographical notes on many others. I altered the formal limits of about 70 others and poorly supplied with books as I am have been able to correct several very gross errors. I am sorry to have to say that my admiration of Dr Carpenter's work does not greatly increase with my use of it - He has reduced chaos to comparative order, it is true, but there is room for an equally great change for the better, yet
