Dear Professor,

I send by the Steamer, my Monterey shells and notes duly packed (Box no 14) for Mr. Carpenter. I have written to him in regard to them. As there is nothing else in the box, it might be as well to send it on to him unopened. I do not think that a much greater contribution to the knowledge of geographical distribution has ever been made on the coast with the exception of Coopers dredgings. I got over 100 species [[strikethrough]] which had [[/strikethrough]] more than Cooper, - or any [[underlined]] other two [[/underlined]], collectors together, have ever done; on this coast. They are at least reliable, and Jewett and Nuttalls are not, in regard to locality.

We are in hopes of getting away next week. No signs of Henry Elliott and I do not believe there will be.
 I found on making inquiry the other day that all the arms and ammunition were purchased but made a desperate
