myself made up the party. It was very pleasant. Prof. Whitney has been very kind to me, furnishing me with a work room and all facilities for study. 

I heard from Prof. Dana today who says that the Brazilian party is partly broken up. If so, we know who is to blame. Isn't it too bad that such a gifted naturalist [[strikethrough]] should [/strikethrough]] and such an attractive man should so render himself obnoxious by his devotion to science, as exemplified in [[underlined]] himself alone? [/underlined. I enclose a paper of mine rom the Cal. Acad. Proc. I rejoice to say that the Academy is greatly on the improve and I feel that while Prof. Whitney has furnished us a considerable portion of the money it took to start it up, still the change is in great part owing to the hard work of Stearns and perhaps myself also. I will leave note the day we start and telegraph. I enclose a Report for Kennicott in case he should get through. You may examine it if you wish but I have given you the main facts already.
