Through the far sighted liberality of Col. Bulkley, an excellent but not extravagant outfit for the future has been obtained. The liberal and enlightened policy of the Directors at home and both commanders of the Expedition on this coast will be appreciated by naturalists in all parts of the world, and the results will keep their memory green when some cheaper and faster method of communications has supplanted the telegraph!
  
The prospective plans in regard to the Natural History work depend much upon the news to be rec'd from Maj. Kennicott the Director; but at present they include my remaining at some northern station during the coming winter, in the capacity of Quartermaster or Surgeon, which will allow of the appropriation of my leisure to the Natural History work, which will include me-
