Plover Bay, Sept 18. 1866

Dear Prof. Baird,
I improve a chance by the whaler Manuella, to send a letter to Frisco in advance of our own fleet.
The expedition has been terribly mismanaged this season. We have been nearly six weeks in this Bay and nothing yet done for the Youcon division. News from Anadyr & Abasa first rate, all well, route easy, many poles cut. Pinkign Gulf and Spanberg Bay, have been explored between & a party housed & furnished at the head of this Bay to lay the line this winter. Golden Gate sent to Anadyr with a party under Richard Bush, material & supplies. Rutgers sailed a few days hence for Grantly Harbor with men under a Capt. Libby, stores & material to construct line to Youkon River. Steamer with Col. & F.N. Wicker on board left last Thursday for St. Michaels & we leave tomorrow for the same port
