Markova Sat. Feb. 5th/17th 1866
Major S. Abasa
Chief Asiatic Division
Collins Overland Tel.
I have the honor to report that we returned on Friday Feb 4th/16th from the mouth of the Anadyr, bringing the party and all the stores which were landed from our vessels last fall.
We left Markova on the 10th/22th of January and should have returned in less than twenty days, had we not been detained by the sickness of our men.
The weather was extremely bad, and from our departure to our arrival yesterday afternoon we experienced almost constant succession of storms. We found the party landed on a bare, sandy point which makes out into the river about six miles above its mouth much lower down than we had anticipated.
They were living in a small house built of boards and bushes, without windows, and almost buried in snow. We found there only three of the party, Messrs Robinson, Harder and Smith. McRae and Arnold had left on Dec 27th (Jan 8th) with a party of Tchuck-tches for Anadyrsk. The party when we arrived was provisioned for four months. I enclose a list of the stores remaining at present
