McRae and Arnold have now been gone forty days and excepting a few vague indefinite reports from the Tchucktches, nothing whatever has been heard from them. The Tchucktche whom they are with, does not bear a very good character, but I do not feel any anxiety about them. 
The only fear I have is that the Tchucktches will get their arms and everything else from them before they will bring them here as they do not at all understand dealing with them. Of course they are entirely helpless. We last heard of them on the Krasnee River up near the great lake. From there the Tchucktches were to travel across the "Tumdras"far back from the river, direct to the crafast. We have arranged transportation for them  from there. With regard to the exploration of the river, I have done the best that I could with the facilities I have, but it was impossible to judge very accurately as to the nature of the country, when the weather was one continual storm, frequently making it impossible to see the banks of the river, on which we were travelling. I determined the course of the river as near as possible with the compass, and know every bend of any importance between here and Anadys Bay. From the Crehast to "Camp McRae"
