^[[6043]] [[circular stamp]] SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION MAY 25 1865 [[/circular stamp]] Steamer America off Cape St Lucas Cala April 19th Dear Prof Baird, The Capt says he will try and speak the steamer going south which we should meet today - I write for the chance of our getting letters on board her. [[line]] We were over two weeks getting across the Isthmus - we lost 3 days on board the Golden Rule before we were landed - Having been assured we would be hurried across the transit I did not keep out much of any collecting apparatus. What I most regretted was not having seines & dredges & Insect nets - We had to work our own way a good deal of the way across - and to pay our own way too - The Transit as it has been managed is odd humbug - Mostly owing to poor officers- Gregory, Holland and Frank Rogers are, however, good fellows with some energy & work in them - I think we will all of us be able to risk the tropics after what weve gone thru. Rothnock, Dall & I for several days worked hard hauling boats up
