have some money to spend. It is
very expensive in most localities - despite
my care I had to spend over $100 in specie
besides, a good deal spent on my personal
account, - and the boys are all cleaned
out. - It would have been possible to
have gotten over at less expense [[strikethrough]]but[[/strikethrough]] by
keeping always with the [[strikethrough]]pa[[/strikethrough]] steamers and passengers
but the hope of finally making better
collecting induced me to frequently separate
and go ahead in canoes. - On the
whole I must confess that our operations
on the transit were pretty much a
failure unless the seeds of "Chikun" I
planted [[strikethrough]]may[[/strikethrough]] grow and bear fruit - pray
[[underlined]]water them[[/underlined]] at any rate.

It has been [[underlined]] hot Hot [[/underlined]] HOT! even
since we passed Cuba till today. Temperature seldom below 90° and often at 95° - all
my clothes kept out for summer wear on the
trip to Cala were lost or stolen on the transit so I have a legitimate excuse for going out
half dressed - I'm dull stuped & lazy and
cant wait till we get to where its cooler Yours R. Kennicott

Transcription Notes:
- "however," should be the first word. - "stuped" is "stupid" in the original --------------- Someone is transcribing "bird" as "hind"... these are ornithologists talking, they are collecting and skinning bird specimens.
