[[underlined]] Assumed [[/underlined]] by such a man. This is my consolation for the long delay. and [[strikethrough]] waisted [[/strikethrough]] ^[[lost]] egging seasons. There need be no fear of any one putting his finger in to Col. Bulkley's pie, and this Natural-History operration, forms no small part of the Exp'd in his eyes. It would in fact rather amuse me now to see any one attempt to interfer with their Nat. History operrations,- as to gobbling speciments &c.- Dr. Ayers, tried it on a little and got mildly knocked over the knuckles.-

Bulkley evidently thinks very highley of you and seems specialy desirous of having your good opinion always. He wished me to state to you, that it was from no false pride or objections to the [[underlined]] S.I. [[/underlined]] style, that he wished to have, his name struck from the labels.-

I have told him, that I believed he would necessarily gain a better reputation from the scientific results of this Exp'd than has been made by the Chief of any Government Exp'd.- that is supposing our Natural-History operations are carried out on the present grand basis, and this all the better, for his refusing the [[strikethrough]] credit of [[/strikethrough]] kind of credit, derived from his name being on the labels.

In short you may rest assured, that in Col. Bulkley I have the best and most reliable ally I ever worked with for Natural-History. He has been very much pleased with Dr. Torrey, who has spent a good deal of time with him, and this has helped our Cause.
