12 It was apparently decided that I was to start off at once with my party of 50 - and that Col B was to send to Conway [[insertion]] on Fraser Riv [[/insertion]] such men (50 were proposed as a grand number) as I might need to finish work with at this end - These [[insertion]] (50) [[/insertion]] men to remain with Conway till I might need them - some 50 more with the heavy outfit were (according to our proposition) to meet me at the mouth of the Youkon. - some time in July.- I was requested by Col Bulkley to appoint Rothrock my "Chief of staff" and I chose with his approbation Pope for a sort of practical telegraphic engineer - I appointed no other officers preferring to choose them on the route when I should be better able to judge of their capacity
