He smiled and said I must not suppose that he judged me from what others said of me — I observed that he didnt look me in the eyes when he said it however. —

He wrote me a memorandum of his wishes (given on the next page)- and I prepared the following to meet what I fancied to be some jealousy of my doing to much — 

Tho I must say if he really was jealous of my doing too much he was taught it by some of his d--d subs the "red tapists" - For [[strikethrough]] at first [[/strikethrough]] during the first week or two after my arrival we talked freely of the credit the work would be to me - and I continually was urging upon him that he should have the credit - I taking Natural History work as my share - He then seemed perfectly satisfied with my doing all I could.
