I was slightly astonished and at first (within myself) a little indignant to find that "Maj" Pope was fitting out a party of twelve men to go up Fraziers river and to the Youkon - 

- The only reason I had for any indignation was that they had taken advantage of my supposed disgrace at headquarters to pick the best of the men I had chosen and who were pledged to go with them ere I could know of it -

- To get Henry Elliott (whom I needed for Nat Hist purposes) flattered into a state of mind where I could not control him - and that they - while [[underlined]] using [[underlined]] my ideas, my knowledge the very requisitions I had made out.  Made a great [[underlined]]Show of refusing[[/underlined]] all advice or assistance from me. -

I perhaps might fairly have blamed Col Bulkley a little for not mentioning his intention - especially as the sending of a smaller party on this route ^[[under Conway's direction]] while I should go up the Youkon
