32 on the 10th of may Col Bulkley told me to make my plans ^[[& requisitions]] and choose ten men with which to make an exploration up the Youkon - I went to work [[underlined]] d-d[[/underlined]] carefully this time and though Ive engaged only seven men ^[[as yet]] they are equal to twenty ordinary chaps. I have gotten the best [[strikethrough]] king[[strikethrough]] kind of a list of goods - I have studied every point of interest and I'm ready to undertake anything in reason Col Bulkely will ask us to do - The "Carcajuns" (my men) are all true blue - gentlemen - tough, nervous, and ready for hard work, fun, or anything that comes up - I'd bet on them to [[the?]] discover the open polar sea. Im in hopes Col Bulkley will let me take more than ten ^[[I ought to have 15]] - He wishes me to take as few from him as possible. I think I should take nearly all from him - on May 10th I submitted the following outline of plan.
