After making less than 500 miles of comparatively easy and safe voyaging in 12 days.

Here as before the organizing and sending of of side expeditions need not retard the rapid and sucessful progress of the main one.

And at this point I could ascertain with certainty whether it would be expedient - to send one or more men up the Lewis or across to Dease Lake of the upper Sticken - or even to push the main party through on that route.

Should I learn ^[[that]] the Lewis River route is impracticable I could continue with the main party up the Pelly.

I would reach the Portage by August 10th about (250 miles in 10 days.)

I would (Aug 11th) cross the Portage in one day carrying canoes over if need be.

Transcription Notes:
jeni92127 reviewed 30 Sept 2017 - "sending of of" should be "sending off of" like the original - "of the upper" should be "or the upper" like the original - His spelling of the Stikine river is hard to pin down. It looks like he spelled it "Stickien" but the "i" would be missing its dot above. - FYI, the "Lewis" river, as he calls it, is actually the "Lewes" river. - "canoes over if" is "canoes over, if" in the original
