698 [[underlined]] Spizella socialis [[/underlined]] [[female symbol]], nest, & 3 eggs. Ft Res. June 15. Bill black, Iris hazel brown, although without very close inspection it appears blak. Nest in a small spruce, a foot from ground, in rather open woods on a high stony island. [[strikethrough]] This and the following marked [[underlined]] socialis [[/underlined]] are certainly of that species. The two following are certainly [[underlined]] pallida [[/underlined]]. But the striped crowned [[underlined]] "var of socialis" [[/underlined]] may be specifically distinct from either, - it is certainly not [[underlined]] pallida [[/underlined]] nor [[underlined]] brewerii [[/underlined]]. 699 [[underlined]] Spizella pallida [[/underlined]] [[female symbol]], nest, & 3 eggs. Bill whitish flesh color with top of upper, & tips of both mandibles black. Legs & feet dirty flesh-color, about the same as in [[underlined]] socialis [[/underlined]], but lighter. The eyes appear to be blue black except upon close inspection, when the iris is seen to be hazel brown about the same as in [[underlined]] socialis [[/underlined]]. Nest placed in a small spruce about 2 feet from ground, in rather open place. I shot the [[female symbol]] as she left the nest. Ft Res. June 15. K
