[[underlined]]Elgin[[/underlined]] - [[underlined]]La Grande[[/underlined]]

[[underlined]]May 29[[/underlined]]
Caught Spermophiles to bisulphide & filled holes with water to measure their capacity.

Shot 3 Nyctacyus at camp in evening. Rained in evening. A warm day, mostly clear.

[[underlined]]May 30[[/underlined]] Broke camp at 7:30 and went south west through Grand Ronde Valley to La Grande & then up Grand Rond R. through the cañon with the railroad to 4 or 5 miles above La Grande & camped. at 4 P.M. Made up a few skins & set traps.

Today is Decoration Day & we found La Grande all on the streets & stores all closed. Roads fairly good most of the way. The central part of Grand Ronde Valley is sandy & rolling. Good soil & good farms. All cultivated or pastured.

Perry is a sawmill town & most of the timber along the cañon has been cut & run down the river.

A clear, warm day. A cold wind down canyon in evening.

Transcription Notes:
Bisulphide of carbon was a common disinfectant/insecticide of the time; Bailey also uses it to kill small mammals. Do not know genus "Nyctacyus" and cannot figure what it might be. "Decoration Day" is the old name for Memorial Day, held at the end of May to honor those who died in the armed forces.
