[[underlined]] Willows [[/underlined]]

[[underlined]] June 9 [[/underlined]] Arrived at Willows Junction at 2:30 AM & got a few hours sleep before breakfast. Found myself near the Columbia River and in a region of Sagebrush, sand, and lava rocks & raging wind. The river is very high and is an immense stream.

Found lots of S. townsendi and saw tracks & holes of Perodipus & probably Perognathus & Onychomys. Some of the birds & most of the plants are Sonoran & I consider the valley almost pure Sonoran.

Sand blew all day.

[[underlined]] June 10 [[/underlined]] dug out & shot a Perodipus & a Perognathus. Caught a Thomomys & shot a turtle & set a few traps near the path to the depo. Got some lizzards & a Crotalis. Packed my things ready to start early in the morning. Clear & hot.

[[underlined]] June 11 [[/underlined]] Got up at 2 AM & found my traps with a Perodipus in one & an Onychomys in another. A light streak appeared in the east as we left Willows Junction at 2:30.

Followed up Willow Cr. to Heppner for 40 miles up a steady grade.

The valley is narrow & dry & not farmed along the lower half. There are good farms along the bottom above to Heppner.

Got mail. Made skins. Found S. beldingi & S. townsendi.
