[[underlined]]Maury Mts.[[/underlined]]

[[underlined]]June 29[[/underlined]] Broke camp at 7:30 & traveled up the river about 16 miles and turned up a wood road into the [[strikethrough]]north[[/strikethrough]] East end of the [[underlined]]Maury Mts[[/underlined]] and camped in pine timber at a point a little below the crest of the range.

Aneroid read 3300 at camp, 3500 at a point near where we left the river, & 4700 at camp in the mts.

The valley is dry & rough & rocky & covered with sagebrush & cedars & Pershia & many Sonora plants. Lava rock & clay beds & some stratified beds are the rocks.

Narrow strips of bottom land along the river are [[strikethrough]]so into[[/strikethrough]] rye fields. Higher up on the sides of the valley the sagebrush is scarce & grass is better. At the edge of timber the grass is splendid. Springs are common.

We look across Ochoco River to the east & see the Blue Mts. Their extreme west end is opposite us.

[[underlined]]June 23[[/underlined]] Caught a few good things & Preble shot some birds. Made up a lot of skins & in P.M. went about 4 miles west along the range and on top. Saw lots of Deer tracks but no deer.

The highest part of the range reaches to probably 6000 feet. Basaltic

Transcription Notes:
"Pershia" should be "Purshia" but transcribed as written.
