by a bridge. There is almost no current here The slough connects Harney and Malheur Lakes. We talked with Mr Hames who keeps the store and he gave us some information about the Lakes. He said that ^[[up to]] about 1881 the marshes about here were all under water and a part of Malheur Lake. Harney Lake was much smaller than at present. A sand ridge breaking away let the water into Harney Lake increasing its size and making a marsh of the country about here and [[strikethrough]]great[[/strikethrough]] [[Lerchy?]] greatly decreasing the size of Malheur so that at present Harney is by far the largest. The distance between the Lakes is said to be about 18 miles at present. We picked up a great many broken arrow heads and some perfect ones some of obsidian and some of a reddish flint.
